The Vietcong (VC) were NOT regular soldiers as employed by the regular army of North Vietnam during the war. Generally speaking, the VC were guerillas/insurgents, although they did at times operate as organized military units. The VC were normally Vietnamese civilians who lived in SOUTH VIETNAM, but were communists who fought against the South Vietnamese army and it's government. The VC were often civilians by day and soldiers by night. Seldom wearing uniforms, and armed with whatever weapons they could attain. They were, when possible, armed with weapons and equipment from North Vietnam, Communist China and the Soviet Union. As with most armies during war time, they also used captured enemy (US) weapons and equipment when they could obtain them. The VC, for the most part, were effectively eliminated as an organized force during the TET offensive of 1968. With most of the Vietnam War being fought by the North Vietnamese Army against US and alled forces, from 1968 onward.
