God Only Knows! they used a variety of dogs- even within the life-span of one animal- as different types of dog-training and stunts were required- a different tactic- and probably different animal, would be used in a situation involving Lassie in a fight with a wolf or other wild animal- and one in a mercy mission situation. not a pup-of-all-trades, different dogs were used for different stunts- you can't have Fred Macmurray ( Mr. sweet guy) and say Clint Eastwood in the same character- even harder to do with animal actors. a good deal of trick Photography was used to hop up heroic situations, etc. a loose piece of cliffside rock might be close to the ground but this would not be seen through a distant telephoto shot focusing on say, Timmy in a tight spot - The rock itself could be molded plastic, paper-mache or something of that ilk, so even if he did fall off- damage would be minimal. It is something like the climbing rocks they used to have in Central Park.

Over the course of the character of Lassie's long standing decades in film, over seven types of collie bred dogs have played the role of Lassie since 1943. She was originally played by a collie named in Pal in 1943 and Pal played Lassie from six films all the way up until 1950. Pal's descendants continue to play Lassie in current and future interpretations of the Lassie character.

While it has been noted that all the dogs that played Lassie were, in fact, male dogs, no surgery was involved, nor can we know if any of the male dogs really, really wanted to be female dogs and should be considered pre-ops. So the answer is "No".
Astro, Pluto, and Lassie were all fictional dogs. Astro on the Jetsons ( he talks), Pluto a Disney character, and Lassie should be well-known to all as a live character, not a cartoon. woof woof.
