In all of the books I have read, the battlefields I have been to, and photos I have seen none have reported on the numbers of dogs hurt or died in the war. I did read of one case where a lady made a visit to a Andersonville a POW camp for the north. She came in with a small dog, but the dog didn't make it out. The men were starving to death so you can imagine what happened to the dog. The numbers of men who were dying and missing were much more important than dogs. The 26th North Carolina lost 714 of its 800 men at Gettysburg and the Maine Heavy Artillery lost 635 men of its 900 within seven minutes of battle. Many men were so afraid that their bodies would not be found or identified they would pin their names on their clothing so their families would know what happened to them. More than 3,000 horses were killed at Gettysburg. Confederate General Nathan Bradford Forrest had 29 horses shot out from under him. Robert E. Lee is reported as having a favorite German Shepard. The southern colonies/states used hound dogs for hunting so I can imagine there were dogs that were lost or dead as the battle raged on, but many farm animals were used for food, died, or were lost in the war.
