How many types of dueling swords are there?

Duels have been fought in the West for over a thousand years. As such, most types of personal weapons have been used at some stage. Early German fencing manuals show judicial duels taking place with special spiked shields. Specific styles of sword designed for dueling include the dueling sword or epee, the Italian dueling Sabre and the German schlager (a type of Sabre). The last duels fought in Europe used dueling swords closely resembling modern fencing epees (which were developed to train for such duels). Films of some of these later duels exist.

Was the duel between Burr and Hamilton legal?

Yes, the duel, held in Weehawken, New Jersey, was legal, but killing the opponent was not. New York had recently outlawed duels, which was the reason Hamilton and Burr rowed across the Hudson River to settle their score. Hamilton died of a wound to the abdomen on July 12, 1804. Vice-President Burr was charged with murder in both New York and New Jersey, but the case never went to trial.

How many presidents died from a duel?

No US president ever died from a duel. In fact, I believe that Andrew Jackson was the only president who actually fought in duel and the duels occurred many years before he was president. Alexander Hamilton, who was not a President, but one of the Founding Fathers, did die from a duel.
