Best Answer

General information.

Nevada had thousands of earthquakes every year but most are too small to be felt, ones that are large enough to be felt are near a hundred. Faults can be found every part of Nevada especially at or around the base of nearly every mountain range.

Nevada is ranked third in the nation for large seismic activity.

see: http://www.2news.tv/news/15843097.html WELLS, Nev., (AP) - A strong earthquake shook rural northeastern Nevada Thursday, causing at least one building to collapse, authorities said. The magnitude of the quake, initially estimated at 6.3, was later revised to 6.0 by the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo. The quake, which struck at 6:16 a.m., was centered in a sparsely populated area 11 miles southeast of Wells near the Nevada-Utah line. ''It was pretty bad,'' said Jane Kelso, who answered the phone at the Motel 6. ''Everything in our whole building shook. ''We have cracks in our walls.'' Three people have been injured as a result, local officials say. The temblor was felt across eastern Nevada, Utah and as far away as Southern California. In Twin Falls, Idaho, residents reported severe shaking and items falling off shelves. ''Definitely a lot of people felt this, and if they were sleeping, they were awoken,'' said USGS geophysicist Carrieann Bedwell. Elko County Undersheriff Rocky Gonzalez said there were reports of some damage to buildings. At least one building collapsed, he said, and a Flying J truck stop was evacuated because of a propane leak, he said. There were no immediate reports of serious injuries, but a manager at the truck stop said the store was a wreck, with groceries and goods scattered. One woman was reportedly injured when cigarette rack fell on her. Charlie Meyers, Elko County commissioner, said the county commission is issuing a state of emergency for Wells, which should open the door to state and federal assistance. No one is being allowed into Wells, Meyers said, because of the fear of aftershocks. Nevada's Department of Transportation is checking bridges, overpasses and roads in the town to make sure they're safe. In Wendover, Utah, on the Nevada-Utah line, Tammy Wadsworth was ironing clothes when the quake hit. ''I kept thinking, 'When is it going to quit?' A couple pictures fell off the walls,'' she said. ''One of my grandkids ran outside. They didn't know what else to do. It scared them.'' Ada County officials in Boise say they received about five calls Thursday morning asking if there was an earthquake. Officials say temblors were felt across the region, with reports of minor damage, falling dishes and cracked house foundations from Boise to Twin Falls. Twin Falls Sheriff Department official Susan Donat says there are no injuries or reports of major damage in the county. She says

the department received a flood of calls moments after the initial temblors were felt, but reports have tapered off. KIDK in Twin Falls is reporting that Highway 93 south of Jackpot, Nev., is closed.

Does Henderson Nevada get earthquakes?

Not necessarily, we get vibrations from Californian earthquakes sometimes. If we ever got our own earthquake, it would be a minor shake and most likely nothing broken.

Are there too many earthquake swarm around cratons co ok ak nv ca mo and do they indicate awaking of the supervolcano?

No. Earthquakes in California, Nevada, and Alaska are primarily the result of normal tectonic acitvity. Some earthquakes in Alaska and northern California are associated with volcanoes, but not supervolcanoes. Earthquakes in Colorado, Missouri, and Oklahoma are related to intraplate stresses and have nothing to do with volcanic activity. Some earthquakes in Oklahoma may be triggered by hydraulic fracturing used to extract oil and natural gas.

What state are most earthquake prone?

Earthquakes can occur nearly anywhere. However, states which are on or near major plate boundaries have very frequent, usually small earthquakes... these would include California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. Nevada, Utah, Hawaii, and Arizona also experience frequent quakes, and there are more than you might expect in Missouri and Arkansas. The United States Geological Survey maintains a nearly real-time quake map on their website (in the related links section) if you're interested in seeing where there have been earthquakes in the past week or so. Alaska has the most earthquakes per year, around 12,000. California has the second most earthquakes per year, around 10,000. Hawaii has the third most earthquakes per year, around 8,000.
