Each female housefly can lay about 500 eggs in batches of 75 to each. It takes maybe 3-4 days to lay the 500 total eggs. They look like wet miniature rice on the surface of decaying food or excrement. The eggs only need 24 hours to hatch into maggots. Adults live from 2 weeks to a month in the wild, and a female is receptive to the male at 36 hours of age. She only needs the one mating to lay fertile eggs for the rest of her life.
