Metals have between 1 and 3 valence electrons; nonmetals have between 4 and 8. Normally, after engaging in a chemical reaction the nonmetals will wind up with a full outer shell of 8 electrons.

In drawing a Lewis structure each nonmetal atom except hydrogen should be surrounded by?

A. 2 electrons..

What is the correct lewis structure for selenium?

Selenium should be surrounded by 6 dots, 4 of the electrons in pairs, and the other 2 as themselves for conventional drawing... - I teach Biology and Chemistry.

How many valence electrons should appear in the Lewis structure of SO2?

18

After drawing a Lewis structure one should?

Count the electrons in the structure to be sure that the number of valence electrons used equals the number available.Be sure the central atom and other atoms besides Hydrogen have an octet.

Should you consider silicon as nonmetal?

NO.... its a SEMI CONDUCTOR

What is the dot structure for strontium?

. Sr .There should be two valence electrons around the element since Strontium is in the second column of the Periodic Table and has two valence electrons filling the 5s shell.

How do you draw the Lewis structure for HCCl2F?

>>..>:Cl:>>| ..H-C-F:>>| ..>:Cl:>>..Carbon should be the central atom sharing two electrons with H, F, Cl, and another Cl.(ignore the >, they were used simply to keep the correct structure as spaces disappear once an answer is saved and the dot structure would appear incorrect)each pair of dots represents 2 unshared electronsthe - between the atoms represents 2 shared electronsCl has 7 electrons in its valence shell, as does FC has 4H has 14+(7*3)+1=26this gives a total of 26 electrons that should be represented in the Lewis dot structure.in a correct Lewis Dot structure, each atom should have 8 electrons around it, save for H, of course, as this one does.

What does the Lewis structure for lithium look like?

The lewis dot structure for ICl2- is an octet exception and it starts like this: Cl-I-Cl with both Cl surrounded by 6 electrons and one single bond with Iodine. The Iodine has 3 pairs of electrons (6 e-) and 2 bonds with Cl (4 e-) for a total electron count of 10. The total valence electrons should add up to 22(I=7, 2Cl=14, + 1e-). The structure should be placed in brackets with correct negative 1 charge. [ICl2]-.

How do you use nonmetal in a sentence?

Handles on screwdrivers should be non metal.

Atom x has 8 protons 8 neutrons in the nucleus two electrons in the first shell and eight electrons in the next shell this atom is?

Your information is inconsistant: Either this is a normal O16 with only 6 electrons in the outer shell, or this is a negative oxygen ion. Go with choice #1. this guy must have missed the 2 electrons in the first shell, it can't be a normal O16 atom because there are more electrons than protons, so it is a negative ion

The electron dot structure for Cl?

There are 3 shells. The first containing 2 electrons then the second containing 8 electrons and the third(the valence shell) containing 7. In total it has 17 electrons. This should help:
