Lithium is in Group 1A and is a metal, therefore it forms +1 ions in order to achieve a noble gas configuration. For 1A and 2A metals, cation charge = group number or valence number. (they are the same thing).

Lithium has an electronic configuration of 2,1. It will give away its electron in the second energy level so that it looks like stable helium with an electronic configuration of 2.

Normally, lithium will lose one electron as an ion. Lithium is a metal, and because of this, will lose electrons instead of gaining them when forming an ion. Lithium only has one outer valence electron in its outer energy shell which it easily looses when reacting with nonmetals (which gain electrons when conjoining with metals).

What is an ion that has lost or gained electrons called?

An atom that has gained or lost electrons is called an ion. An atom that has gained one or more electrons becomes a negatively charged ion called an anion. An atom that has lost one or more electrons becomes a positively charged ion called a cation.

When an object gains or loses electrons has it an electric charge?

That depends entirely on sign of the charge. If the object gains a positive charge, then that means the object as lost electrons, since electrons are negatively charge. If the charge is negative, then the object has gained electrons. It is also possible that the charge was created by a movement in protons, which are positively charged, in which case the object may not have lost or gained electrons.

What is gained in a chemical reaction?

Electrons are the ones gained or lost in a chemical reaction. Electrons are gained in oxidation and lost through the chemical reaction known as reduction.

What are charged particles when atoms gain or lose electrons?

An atom that has lost or gained electrons is known generally as an ion. More specifically, an atom that has lost electrons becomes a cation. It has a positive charge. An atom that has gained electrons becomes an anion. An anion has a negative charge.

Why do objects become positively or negatively charged?

An item becomes positively or negatively charged through losing/gaining electrons. As electrons are lost the item becomes positive, and as electrons are gained the item becomes negative. (Electrons are negative charges and protons are positive charges.) An item cannot lose protons, as protons are fixed. Gaining/losing electrons can be gained by charging by friction, contact, or induction (through the air).
