How much water is needed for a sprinkler system?
The most common fire sprinkler system is a wet pipe system wich always has water in it. The sprinkler heads have a heat sensitive element, most commonly a glass bulb filled with liquid that expand when exposed to heat, after a certain temperature is met , usually 160 degrees or more the glass bulb breaks and allows water to flow on the fire in a uniform water density. The sprinkler system may have an alarm device that sounds an audible alarm in the building, and/or call the fire department. The system may have a connection for the fire department to add to the automatic water supply. there are other types of systems, dry-pipe, preaction, and others which are similar but do not have water in the piping initally due to concerns of freezing water in the system, or sensitive areas where accidental water damage would be a greater problem than fire.(museums, computer rooms, etc)
How do you install a sprinkler system?
There are two main methods of sprinkler system installation: open trench and pulled pipe. Open trench typically uses PVC pipe and pulled pipe typically uses poly pipe. Other than the pipe and fittings, the main difference in installation will be that the pulled pipe system requires a hole and saddle tee at the location of each sprinkler head. The steps for installing an automatic sprinkler system using an open trench method are: 1. Start with a good sprinkler system design (try searching "sprinkler system designer" for support options) 2. Make sure that you have all necessary tools, equipment, and permits 3. Have Blue Stakes mark all utilities prior to any digging 4. Install a backflow prevention device according to code 5. Place flags at the location of each sprinkler head 6. Mark and dig all trenches and valve manifold locations 7. Build and install valve manifolds (preassembled valve manifolds can make this easier) 8. Connect mainline pipe from water source connection to valve manifolds 9. Lay lateral line pipe from the valve manifolds to the location of each sprinkler head 10. Install tees and swing assemblies for each sprinkler head and flush lines 11. Connect sprinkler heads to swing assemblies; set head to level with ground 12. Install sprinkler timer/controller and connect sprinkler wire from timer to valve manifolds 13. Install nozzles on sprinkler heads 14. Install valve boxes (as required) and backfill all trenches 15. Run a zone by zone test and adjust nozzle patterns

How do you repair a broken pipe on a sprinkler system?
I am assuming you mean for an in-ground sprinkler system as opposed to a fire suppression sprinkler system like you have in the ceilings of some buildings. You generally cannot patch a break in a sprinkler system. The pressure is too high and the patch will blow out. You need to replace the part of the pipe with the break in it. 1) Shut off the water to the portion of the sprinkler system with the broken pipe. 2) Dig down to the pipe - CAREFULLY so that you don't add more breaks to the pipe. If you already have a pretty good idea where the break is, then dig over that area, if not start in the middle of the area where you think the break is and when you reach the pipe, dig a trench along the pipe until you find the location of the break. 3) Dig a couple of feet along the pipe on either side of the break and wide enough to have room to work on the pipe. Depending on the type of pipe that may mean a foot on either side and a foot below the pipe (if it is metal and you need to get a monkey wrench on it. 4) Cut the pipe a few inches on either side of the broken section of pipe and remove the broken section. 5) Measure the length of the section you cut out. 6) Get a piece of new (intact pipe) at least that length and of the same gauge (diameter and wall thickness) 7) Join the piece of new pipe to the ends where you cut the broken piece out. Exactly how you do this depends on the type of pipe. If it is steel you will need a pipe threader to thread the pipe ends that are still in the ground as well as the replacement pipe, some teflon pipe sealing tape and some union fittings. If it is PVC you need a couple of unions and some PVC pipe sealant. If it is polyethylene or polybutylene, you will need a couple of unions and some ring clamps. If you don't know how to join the pipes, you need to ask a new question about joining the type of pipe you have. 8) Once you have joined the new piece to the old pieces, turn the water back on to the section where you were working and check to see if it is leaking. If it is, you have to go back and fix the cause of the leak. 9) Once you are confident that the pipe isn't leaking any more, replace the dirt under the pipe and pack it down as best you can, then fill in the rest of the dirt over the top.
