There are no exact numbers- only guesses. In many cases, firearms are made by governments that do not release information on how many they have. One estimate is about 875 million firearms. 650 million of those are owned by civilians.
There are in excess of 12 billion firearms in the world, not counting military weapons larger than fifty caliber.

Go out and find a "catalogue of Firearms" in a book store, you will find the answer there. <><><> There are several THOUSAND gun makers.
No one knows an exact number. Many nations have no registration of privately owned firearms, and governments do not like to publish defense information on how many weapons they have. In 2007, it was ESTIMATED that there are ABOUT 875 million firearms in the world, of which ABOUT 270 million are in the US. There are about 1,135 companies world wide that make about 8 million firearms a year. Above information is taken from the report of the Small Arms Survey by the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. The term "small arms" denotes firearms fired by one person from the shoulder or hand, such as rifles, pistols and shotguns. It does not include crew served weapons, weapons mounted on boats, aircraft, or vehicles.

Not all firearms CAN hit a precise target many yards away. RIFLED firearms impart a spin to the bullet as it is fired. The spinning bullet tends to keep going in the direction it was pointed in at the start. Early firearms were smoothbore (unrifled) and not very accurate.
