The industrial area of the US started gaining momentum right after the second world war. This is was as a result of various manufacturing ventures and many plants were established at that time.
They are owned by Toyota Motor North America.
Well, Ford, Gm and other American brands are made in the US, however there are still car manufacturing plants for such American companies located in Ontario because it is cheaper for the companies as they do not have to pay for each worker's healthcare in Canada.
Henry Ford used his auto manufacturing plants to help the US build planes, Jeeps and many parts for planes and other items in both wars. In World War 2 he also BUILT a special huge plant for building planes. Ninety percent of his workers were women. Hats off to Henry Ford.
