Why were movies made out of film?
A "movie" is actually a very rapid succession of still images, which give the impression of a single moving image. This applies for all movies, including those seen in a computer, in a movie theater (cinema), a TV set, etc. Through this principle is that movies were first invented: A long film was printed with hundreds to thousands of individual images (also known as frames), which were then quickly cycled through the light of a projector. The projected image was that of the several frames moving one after the other, but the movement of the frames was so quick, that the human eye and brain couldn't distinguish each individual image, and interpreted the whole thing as a single moving image. Note that it is from this idea that the term "moving pictures" was invented. Back then, the film method was the best viable way people could come up with to make movies.
