A fully loaded (80000lbs) tractor trailer travelling at 55mph will take about 300 feet (the length of a football field)to come to a stop. An empty unit will take nearly 900 feet to stop. This may sound strange but an empty unit has much less weight spread over 18 wheels therefore creates less friction between the tires and road and is prone to skidding making the stopping distance much longer.

What is a bobtail tractor?

One with no trailer. When you go to a truck stop, a lot of them have "bobtail parking" areas. They don't want you to park the tractor itself in a place a tractor with a trailer can fit, so they'll take the real short areas and designate them "bobtail parking" zones.

Where can one purchase a trailer winch?

You can go to many places to purchase a trailer winch but the best option is to stop by your local Menard's, Lowe's, or even Walmart. If you can't find one there, check the nearest Tractor Supply Store.

Which will take longer to stop full load trailer or empty one?

Typically an empty trailer will take longer to stop. The reason is that the tractor trailer have been designed to work together loaded. The trailer does not get enough traction when empty so the friction generated by the trailer tires to contribute to stopping the truck is not great enough and the stopping distance increases.

Where can you weigh your trailer?

What is the use of tractor control valve?

The tractor air control valve? Stops air from flowing to trailer red air line. Safety switch incase trailer falls off truck all the air will not go out the broken hose and cause tractor spring brakes to lock up due to low air. It can be tested by disconnecting red air line while trailer brakes air released. Air should stop at about 30psi I think.

How do you properly stop a tractor trailer with a manual transmission?

Ideally, you would anticipate your stop, and progressively downshift as you get closer to the point where you come to a complete stop. However, the world is not ideal, and sometimes all you can do is get on your brakes. The truck can stop while in any gear.

When do you have to stop and do a walk around safety inspection while driving a Tractor trailer?

If you are hauling hazardous material or an open deck (e.g., flatbed, stepdeck, lowboy, beam trailer, etc), you're supposed to stop and do that within 50 miles of the shipper, then again every three hours or 150 miles.

If a tractor trailer backs into you at a stop sign what happens if you dont have insurance and he admits to being at fault?

Get the driver of the truck to pay for your damage. If he refuses you may have to take legal action.
