The Great Plains are a natural prairie that has existed for many thousands of years.However, parts of the plains in and around Oklahoma (the so-called Dust Bowl) were made less fertile by unwise farming activities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Disastrous dust storms broke out during a sustained drought between 1934 and 1940, leaving many farms destroyed and towns deserted.
One of the biggest similarities is that both their economies are partly based on tourism. Other than that there's not many clear similarities since mostly they are very different kind of regions.

It is true that when mining was no longer profitable, and mines stopped producing, the mining towns became ghost towns. The reason was because the people that lived in the town had to leave the area looking for work.
They were gold rush Boom Towns that had no importance when it was mined out.
