There are 20 different varieties of armadillos in the world today. Some species are endangered and threatened. Because of their elusive nature, it is difficult to say exactly how many are in the world today. What is known is that the nine-band species is the only one thriving.

It also suffers from habitat loss resulting from deforestation.A few other species may be endangered but are not listed as such because their status requires additional investigation.

Only the giant armadillo of South America is considered as endangered. The pink fairy armadillo may also be endangered but its status is currently uncertain. Most other species are doing quite well and the range of the nine-banded armadillo continues to expand well into the United States.
