this changes with time. currently average storage of a hard disk is about 250 GB when purchasing a new computer. The highest amount of space I have seen on a new hard drive is 1.5 TB (that's 1024 GB * 1.5) and the smallest I have seen is down to a few MB (1024 MB = 1 GB) but that's for a very very old hard disk.

∙ 14y agoFor consumer use, storage can be described in terms of cost. Generally, increasing capacities will increase in cost exponentially. As a home user, the goal is generally to purchase a hard drive that maximizes storage for cost. Note that people with the intention to use computers as media stations should generally invest in at least 1TB of hard drive space. Keep in mind that laptop hard drives do NOT offer capacities comparable to desktop models; laptops should not generally be regarded as platforms for mass data storage, at least internally. External hard drives are available, as well; while they generally will not operate as quickly as internal drives, they may offer added convenience, especially in the case of laptops. Depending on the model, external enclosures may add from $10 to $50 to the cost of the drive.

For desktop models...
A 500GB hard drive costs around $55US.
A 1TB hard drive costs around $85US.
A 2TB hard drive costs around $210US.
For laptop models...
A 160GB hard drive costs around $55US.
A 250GB hard drive costs around $65US.
A 350GB hard drive costs around $75US.
A 500GB hard drive costs around $95US.
For USB flash drives (thumbsticks)...
4GB thumb sticks range from $8 to $11US.
8GB thumb sticks range from $15 to $20US.
16GB thumb sticks range from $30 to $65US.
32GB thumb sticks range from $55 to $85US.
In all these cases, larger capacities do exist, but they do not fall into the realm of "typical" as of yet. Higher prices sometimes correspond to increased quality; make a habit of checking for product reviews before making a purchase and especially before jumping at "deals."
