This is an interest theory. The biggest obstacle is that the largest purchaser of retail goods in the US, Walmart, is the leading purchaser of goods from China. It is interesting to note that, since Walmart started its buying campaign in the 1980's, entire companies that manufacture goods have moved their operations to China in defense of their business. Most if not all, televisions are manufactured in Asia as a result of this practice. PBS did a documentary about it a few years ago. Many of the goods that we purchase are no longer made in the US at all. Such things as coffee makers, microwave ovens, and clothing are simply unavailable as a domestic product. While the US is the leader in inventing technology, exporting that technology to other countries for manufacture has long been a practice due to the high cost of manufacturing in the US.
