This is an almost religious point. Most commonly it is believed that you should get 40% of your calories from carbs, 30% of the calories from proteins and 30% of the calories from fat. The low carb approach however advices to go almost as low as 10% of the daily calorie intake from carbs and then the intakes of protein and fat go up to still meet the desired amount of calories. You could try out which balance of these three works best for you. 1 gram of fat contains about 9 kilocalories. So if you choose the intake of 30% fat, then you take 30% of your daily kcalories and divide them by 9. So: (1600*0.3)/9 = 53.333333333 grams

take the number of calories you consume daily, and take 20% of this number (the amount of fat calories per day you need). in your case, you should consume 360 fat calories. one gram of fat is equal to 9 fat calories, so divide the 360 grams of fat by nine, to give you 40 grams of dat per day.

If you are trying to devise a healthy diet for yourself, what is important is not so much how many grams of fat you consume, as what kind of fat you consume, whether you are talking about saturated or high-cholesterol type fats such as you would get from eating bacon, which is bad for you, or omega-3 fatty acids, such as you would get from fish or from flax seed oil, which is beneficial.
