Why Gold?
Gold is an inert metal. This means that it doesn't react very much. Therefore it doesnt react with oxygen in the atmosphere and rust (Oxidize). Gold is however, a good conductor of electricity.
One of the biggest problems in electronics is rust. If it occurs in a connection then it can reduces the amount of electricity that is able to flow through that joint causing the electronics to fail. Gold plating the joint ensures that this cannot happen and extends the life of the electronics.
In each mobile phone there is around 24 milligrams of gold. Thats about the weight of a postage stamp. See that gold is a dense element that is not really much.
Recycling
What makes it profitable to recycle gold is simply the immense amount of phones which are regularly replaced due to factors like function, form or even just fashion. When the latest version of phones are released customers scramble to update to the newer model. It's something that mobile phone manufacturers encourage since they get the opportunity to resell an updated enhanced model of the previous phone.
Enviromentally friendly recycling
There is always a trade off between profitable recycling and the enviroment. Recycling of any materials is not a free lunch ticket! Gold recycling uses some extremely nasty, dangerous and poisonous chemicals. In advanced countries the proper safety and practices are enforced. However in some third world countries it is apparent that these regulations are ignored, releasing potentially deadly toxins into the enviroment.
