In my humble opinion, almost EVERY history textbook for school is HORRIBLE. They're dry, boring, and uninteresting. They seem to fall into 2 categories: 1.) Too general without sufficient detail to make it meaningful to kids OR 2.) Too bogged down in detail to give a 'big picture view' to kids. Most history books try to cram TOO MANY things into the school year and do a poor job on most of the topics. If you want to find an INTERESTING writer of American History, try Joseph J. Ellis. His books made me WANT to read more history and he is VERY understandable in his treatment of issues.
