Bow rehairers can choose from Siberian, Mongolian, Manchurian, Polish, and more recently, Argentinian horsehair.

The hair comes from the horses tails... sadly, it is often a by product of the meat trade.

I do not know of anyone who dyes horse hair for violin bows (although now that you mention the idea, I'm sure someone will start a business to do just that!)

Violin bow hair is made from the tail-hair of horses. As such, whatever coloration was in the horse hair will be in the hair from which the violin bow is rehaired.

Generally, violin bow rehairers pay top dollar for an entire tail's worth of hair. They will choose the hair based on the quality of the surface of the hair for making bows, and may own more than one tail from which to make hair hanks for violins, violas, cellos and basses. Additionally, different hair is desirable for the viola da gamba family, and a rehairer who services the early music community may have one or more tails specifically for those bows.

You can usually find white hair (traditionally preferred for violins and violas, and sometimes cellos or smaller viol bows) and black hair (which may not be all-black) for string basses, coarser cello hairing jobs and voila da gambas in all sizes.

I don't know of anyone looking for dappled/brown/palimino bow jobs, myself!

There's a outfit in Washington state called rainbows ( get it?). blue, green, purple, red ect. even red, white and blue!

Horse hair is stronger than plastic, wire, string or thread. If you used any other possible material, it would break. Also, it makes the sound a lot cleaner and clearer. If you use any other material, you would have a scratchy sound.

No. Horse hair, if looked at under a microscope has little notches in it, which, when rosined grabs and vibrates the strings. Horse hair breaks all the time. that's why you have to get it re-haired.

It is because horse hair grips the strings and when you put rosin on the horse hair also the horse hair is the part of the bow that vibrates the strings.

Do the hairs of the violin bow come from a male horse?

Theoretically you could, but it would be very hard to find someone to agree to use the horse hair to do the rehair job. Also, the quality of the horse hair could be well below normal standards. For a violin, white horse hair is the predominant type of hair used and other varieties will not produce a brilliant sound.

What is the violin string bow made of?

Basically a bow is a long stick. At each end, there is a piece of wood or other material which goes out a short distance from the stick at right angles to it. It holds strings or other material or at least that is what it looks like. They all have technical names. Beginners bows may use nylon or some other material. A professional uses Siberian horse hair. A professional frequently takes a substance in his hand and runs it up and down on his bow. That is rosin. It keeps his instrument from making a screeching sound. You will hear beginners screech as they play. Professionals do not make that sound. The violin, the smallest of the string instruments, has the longest bow.
