I don't have a definite answer, but there was a report that he arrives to the Oval Office at 7:45, and in a press conference recently Robert Gibbs said he's "traditionally a night owl." So, not much would be my guess. I'd say about 3-4 hours a night. If anyone ever gets the opportunity to ask him, please report back to this site. Thanks. :D

It depends on his schedule that day. By most accounts, the president does not need a lot of sleep: even though he enjoys staying up late and reading, he can get up early to be ready for performing his presidential duties. For example, sometimes, he has to get up before dawn, in order to get on Airforce One and fly to Another Country to meet with world leaders; presidents have to be able to work in a number of time zones. Other days, he can sleep a little later; but most sources say he likes to be up early to get some work done and eat breakfast with his family.

The president has said he likes to stay up late reading, but he also does not mind waking up early to begin the day with his family and also start getting things done. Some sources have said he wakes up around 5.30 or 6 AM on days when he is in Washington DC.

This is a good question many want to know about all Presidents and each on is different.

JFK got by on the least amount of sleep of those in the last 50 years as in two hours on average. He had severe Back pain and took a lot of narcotic meds yet functioned well and in the Cuban missile Crisis, he went three days at a time without any sleep.

As for President Obama it depends. On campaigns, both he and Romney got by on two hours a day often but Obama is a night person like I am and he often gets a late start in the mornings and is often up at two am reading or preparing for the next day so he is known to average four hours a night but he gets some 6 and 7 hour nights too on rare occasions. The First Lady would be the one to known the absolute fact on this. I'm going by interviews from the President and what close friends have reported about him.

In the last 50 years, I gave the one who slept the least and Reagan slept the most. Reagan could fall asleep instantly at night no matter what was going on and slept avg eight full hours and also took naps in the day 30 minute naps here and there on average. He did have a few sleepless nights like everyone but he slept the most. Hillary Clinton can fall asleep on demand as well and has been known like Reagan to fall asleep during speeches of others knowing the outcome.

This could be one reason most Presidents seem to age faster while President. Less sleep than body needs will age us. Martha Stewart and many executives do not require much sleep naturally and it will not age them but most of us need 8 hours to function properly. I get by on two hours some nights/days due to MS illness which is not good but important people like Romney and the President often do not sleep enough.

To make this a little longer, studies show people who make the most money as in millions often sleep much less than those who make under 100k a year. Poor people tend to sleep more and perhaps part of it is depression.
