Most are in partnership with other doctors, unless they are in a rural area and practicing alone. If they are on hospital call, they will be in surgery all morning doing hysterectomies, D & C's, laparoscopies, etc. plus delivering babies and doing C-Sections. If they are in the office they may be doing breast and pelvic exams, colposcopy with cervical biopsies, abortions (if they chose to) and counselling women on Birth Control and infertility. Depending on how busy the hospital and their practice is somebody has to be available at night for those deliveries.
It depends on the type of practice she has. Hospital midwives have similar shift hours to obstetricians. Homebirth midwives who have a solo practice are on call 24/7, while homebirth midwives in a group practice may switch on call shifts.
Well, a midwife basically delivers babies. She holds the baby after it has just left the woman's body and perform tasks such as cutting the umbilical cord and washing the baby after birth.
