Being a salaried employee a Mechanical Engineer only gets paid for 8 hours of work a day, no matter how many hours he actually works.

While in most cases he does only work 8 hours in a day, when schedules are slipping or other problems crop up he will be expected to work as much as necessary to resolve it as soon as possible. I have known a few engineers that worked more than 20 hours a day for a few weeks to resolve a particularly difficult issue.

45 hours a week.

As engineers are exempt salaried workers, they are required to work a minimum of 40 hours a week for their salary pay and may work as many additional unpaid hours as they are willing to work to complete their usual assigned tasks and duties. I have personally worked with engineers that would do 120+ hour weeks as a deadline approached to avoid missing it.

As professionals, engineers work as long as is necessary to complete the work -often without any resulting increase to their normal salary. For routine work, most professionals work around 8 hours each day.
