Hitler joined the Nazi party in 1919 when it only had about 200 members. He proved a galvanizing leader and the party grew rapidly. Although the politcs of the German republic could be rough and tumble with frequent street violence, which the Nazis were happy to participate in, the elections were generally free and honest and the Nazis electoral strength grew rapidly. After elections in 1932 the Nazis had the most seats in the Reichstag (parliament) and, after a lot of political maneuvering, Hitler was appointed chancellor in January of 1933. After that he abolished the constitution and banned all other political parties. Michael Montagne

What was Winston churchill mentality on Hitler and the other totalitarian dictators?

Obviously he was concerned about totalitarian regimes. He knew before he became prime minister that Hitler was a threat and this was punctuated by his invasion of Poland. However, I think that it can be said that this harden his view and that the threat of the Soviet Union truly scared him. His Iron Curtain speech demonstrates that he saw a society and a government who were hiding something from the rest of the world was dangerous. In the end, he knew that democratic countries could not simply sit back and allow these people to rule entire countries. He had resolve to stop these men at any cost, both Hitler and Stalin. Reading both his "Iron Curtain" speech and "We will fight them on the beaches" speech showed his true views on how totalitarian leaders should be dealt with.
