The exact number will never be known but the best we can do is the second census in the book of Numbers. This second census was taken close to the end of the 40 year wilderness period. It included all the men '20 years old and upward....all that are able to go to war.' It thus excluded any disabled and the Levites who were dedicated to the service of the tabernacle and of course the women, children and older men.
This second census came up with a figure, given the relevant constraints of 601,730. From this it is assumed, adding women children and older men and Levites that a figure of around 2 million in all is about right. This second census is recorded in Numbers chapter 26, with the final total in verse 51.
If one is interested in statistics and comparisons the first census took place early in the 40 years and under the same constraints produced a figure of 603,530. The reduction was due to the various plagues which the Israelites brought upon themselves.
More than 600,000 People who wandered on the wilderness
All of the 600,000 died after they reached the age of 60 (Numbers ch.14) and had had children.

It took 40 years for the Israelites to travel from Egypt to Canaan. Had there been no delays, most could have made the trip in 11 days (Deuteronomy 1). The main delay is explained in Numbers ch.13 and 14.

What would it have taken to survive 40 years in the wilderness? Faith, believing that God the Father will provide every need for He provides even for the birds in the sky, imagine how much He must care for us. And also hope, knowing that one day God will bring the Israelites out of the wilderness with victory.
