The individual US Supreme Court justices determine which law clerks to hire; they don't accept assignments. Each justice typically hires four clerks a year ahead of the Term the clerk will work. Hiring is now complete for the 2010-2011 Term.
This year, Justice John Paul Stevens chose to hire only one law clerk for the 2010-2011 Term (a year from now), which suggests he is planning to retire at the end of the 2009-2010 Term. Retired justices are entitled to have one law clerk in their employ.
