Best Answer

There are two a white lion and a normal colored lion and the white lion is endangered
There WERE 7 subspecies of lion.

1. The Angola

2. The Masai

3. The Senegalese

4. The South African

5. The Asiatic

6. The Cape

7. The Barbary

Of these lion sub species only 5 exist in the wild. The Cape Lion became extinct by 1860. The Barbary Lion was thought to be extinct by 1920. Since then, however, there have Barbary Lions found in captivity. There are about 140 left in the world.

Currently there are only two species/breeds of lions that are alive. They are the African Lion and the Asiatic Lion. Other species of Lions like the European Lion, the American Cave Lion and the Barbary Lion were all hunted to extinction centuries ago. As of now, all lion species are endangered. The Asiatic Lion is critically endangered with only a few hundred species left in the wild.
•African lions Asiatic lion

American Lions Mountain Lion Cave lion Leopard

•White lions Golden lions these are the types

The number of subspecies of lion is up for debate. At one time there was thought to be twelve but most people believe that the real number is either 7 to 9.

There is the North African Lion, also known as the Barbary Lion who is the largest of the tree breeds. The best way to tell a Barbary lion other than their large size is that their mane is dark and runs all the way down their chest and underbelly. They are extinct in the wild and there are less then 200 left in captivity.

A little side note, the Barbary lion went extinct not only from poaching but from being fought by the Romans. In most biblical accounts and historic accounts of a man being tossed in the lions den or fighting a lion they were typically fighting Barbary Lions.

The Asiatic Lion also known as the Indian or Persian lion is the smallest, there are fewer then 400 in the wild and not very many left in captivity.

West African Lion, is found in western Africa, from Senegal to Nigeria.

Northeast Congo Lion, is found in the northeastern parts of the Congo.

East African or Massai Lion, is found in East Africa, from Ethiopia and Kenya to Tanzania and Mozambique.

Southwest African or Katanga Lion, is found in southwestern Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Angola, Katanqa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Southeast African Lion or Transvaal Lion, is found in the Transvaal region of southeastern Africa, including Kruger National Park.

The Cape Lion became extinct in the wild around 1860. Results of mitochondrial DNA research do not support the status as a distinct subspecies.

The Tsavo lions. The reason people believe that these lions are a breed all their own is because even the male lions have no mane and are larger than most other lions in the region that they come from. This theory is still up for debate.
