A low-residency program is a form of education, normally at the university level, which involves some amount of distance education and brief one to two week on-campus residencies. These programs are most frequently offered by colleges and universities which also teach standard full-time courses, and most presently existing are Master's Degree programs in Fine Arts, often teaching creative writing. The first such program started in the United States at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont.

There are many low-residency MFA Creative writing programs, fewer in other graduate areas, and very few undergraduate options (Goddard College, Lesley University and Union Institute.)

What is the different between academic writing and creative writing?

Many think that academic and creative writing are similar terminology. However it is not true, but yes we can say that the two are much more related to each other. Academic writing means participating in conversations and trying to convince others that you are right through appropriate rhetoric and reasoning. When you start thinking of academic writing as a form of creative writing, the task turns from an obligation to an opportunity. Overall, creative writing allows for more personal expression, while academic/scientific writing aims to explore ideas, arguments, or concepts. Academic writing requires factual evidence of support and comes with challenges such as time constraints. There is an online writing service platform called Home of dissertations available to help you resolve all the queries that you are looking for related to your academics.

Creative Writing Jobs?

Creative writing jobs are artistic in nature and this means that finding a suitable job can be difficult as artistic pursuits are not always the easiest to venture out on. However, hard work, dedication and time can land an individual in a creative writing position that is both financially and psychologically rewarding in many different ways. Many different opportunities exist for creative writers. Some of the most common creative writing careers include: songwriting, screenwriting, advertising, fiction writers, greeting card authors, travel writers, gaming writers and bloggers. In addition to these careers, there are always plenty of other opportunities to use creative abilities to finesse content and reach an audience. Salaries differ based on the type of creative writing that is completed and the manner in which the writing is published. For an advertising writer, the average salary is around $50,000 annually, while a screenwriter can make $83,000 or more annually. A published author or blogger could potentially make millions if their work goes viral and is liked by many readers, but as with any career in the arts, the need to stand out above the rest is always important in order to make the big bucks. Creative writing careers are rewarding psychologically. For an individual who loves to write and has a creative ability, a career in creative writing can be soothing, exciting and highly rewarding overall. Many creative writers work freelance but some become in-house employees, especially those writing advertising material. Most of the time, creative writers have flexibility to choose their own work hours, write about topics of interest to them and decide where they wish content to be published. A college education is not a necessity for a creative writer but it can be very beneficial, especially a background in creative writing and English. Many creative writers, especially gaming writers or travel writers, write on topics that they are familiar with firsthand. For instance, a gaming writer is usually very interested in video games, play often and has firsthand knowledge of the topic. Travel writers have typically traveled the areas that they write about and have firsthand knowledge of the subject matter. So, while a college education or firsthand knowledge of a topic is not necessary, it can be very helpful to the writer.

Are techniques used for creative writing avoided in other types of writing?

It depends on the writer. If you are in a business program, many people will say true. I personally believe it is false. Many people think that first-person writing is "unprofessional" ... and of course, as a student of or working for those people, it should be avoided. I think that removing the voice from anything makes the writing stilted. You can have professional first and second-person writing. It is possible. :) Other techniques can carry over as well. Using description, observation, detail... these techniques are great in marketing writing, and can be helpful in writing instructions or manuals. Creative writing techniques can enhance other types of writing.
