The precursor cell to blood platelets are megakaryocyte precursor (MkP) cells in the bone marrow.
The megakaryoblast undergoes endomitoses (the nucleus becomes polyploid and the cell does not divide) and ultimately develops into megakaryocyte. The successive stages are Megakaryoblast -> Promegakaryocyte -> Megakaryocyte Megakaryocyte produces thrombocytes, that is fragments of megakraryocyte' cytoplasm.

Magakaryocytes are normally found only in the bone marrow, releasing their contents (platelets) into the blood. However, in certain disorders, MDS for example, they can be found abnormally in the blood (in this case as micromegakaryocytes).
