You can't. The light will come back on in just a few seconds or minutes if you do not repair the problem. So resetting the light will not work.

Whether or not a car will pass inspection with the Check Engine light on is up to the state or county giving the test. As long as the car passes an emissions test, it should be fine.

To pass a state inspection you must have muffler and cat if equiped from fractory some places dont look but the state is getting a little tuffer

The answer is simply no. It doesn't matter if the light turned on for one of Chevy's annoying "50,000 mile checks" or if there's a sensor out, etc... The 'Check Engine' light is an instant inspection failure in New York State & they WILL charge you for the inspection. Yes it's completely ridiculous, but what do you expect, it IS New York State. The politicians here would mug you on the streets if the state government thought they could get away with it.
Inspection laws vary from state to state. State governments do not recognize ASE certifications.
Pa state emissions costs $30 and inspection costs $25. What a joke, right?
