The Bronx and Manhattan are right next to each other. The Bronx is directly north of Manhattan. The two boroughs are separated by a skinny stretch of river known as the Harlem River. The Harlem River branches off of the Hudson River, flows down over the top of Manhattan (which is the bottom of the Bronx) and into the East River.
The Harlem River is about 500 feet wide, so, the distance between Manhattan and the Bronx is 500 feet.
See the Related Link below for a New York City subway map, which shows you all the five boroughs, as well as the Hudson, Harlem, and East Rivers. Note that while the top of Staten Island is visible on the map (at the bottom left corner) the entire island is not shown, since the subway doesn't go there.
There are 508.38 miles of street in Manhattan. If you include all 5 boroughs, there are 5936.18 miles of paved streets (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island)http://www.fcny.org/cmgp/streets/pages/reports.htm
