This varies with engine and it's care. Keep an eye on your compression numbers. once they fall below threshold around 120-130 or if you have one not within a certain percentage of the others, it will be time. Use thicker oil when milage is up there and do your oil changes.
PS- Don't use synthetic, many get leaks like a sieve when they change over.

What is the displacement of the engine? What is the bore and stroke? What angles are the cams at? Is the engine new or rebuilt? How old is the bike? How many miles? What type of riding do you do? Is it cold or hot out? OR................ Check the dipstick or oil window and add as needed.
