A serial wire can be used for several uses. Mainly, it's used for basic communication between different devices. The main advantage is the fact that serial communication can use only three wires. Parallel requires several more, typically eight, or sixteen, plus signalling, and traditionally is faster. But for simple communication between devices, which could be computers or other devices, serial communication can simplify things. Serial communication can also be used for great distances. The telegraph was serial communication. Hence "AT&T"!
Serial communication is preferred over parallel communication for long-distance WAN links primarily due to reduced crosstalk and electromagnetic interference. In parallel communication, multiple wires transmit data simultaneously, increasing the risk of signal degradation over long distances. Serial communication, using a single wire or pair, minimizes these issues and simplifies the design and implementation, allowing for higher data rates and longer transmission distances without significant loss of integrity. Additionally, serial connections require fewer physical resources, making them more cost-effective for WAN applications.
Serial transmission is a method of transmitting data where one bit is transmitted after another in a single wire. Serial transmission is usually used to transmit data between two computers as it is less expensive, yet at a cost of a slightly slow speed. A minimum of two wires is needed for serial transmission, which is less compared to a minimum of eight wires in parallel transmission. Serial transmission is used to send data over long distances as the bits are less likely to get out of order. It is used in devices such as modems, bar code readers and light pens .
SCSI: Small Computer System Interface.ATA:(Also known as IDE) Serial ATA comes under this category, which is very popularly used interface.SAS: Serial Attached SCSISATA: Serial ATA is a serial link - a single cable with a minimum of four wires
8mm suppression wires at a minimum.

A Cat5 cable contains 4 pairs of 2 wires twisted together, making a total of 8 individual wires, however only 2 wire pairs (4 wires) are actually used for communication.
Wireless communication is, the connection of two or more devices without using wires. A few examples include cell phones, WI-FI internet, radio, and Satellite communications. Hope this helps- Dan
a usb cable has four wires, two for power and two for communication.
bus is a set of wires that is used as a communication path.
This depends entirely on the use of the cable. In a full features RS-232 cable there would be 9 cables. But most hardware that uses a serial cable doesn't have the need for all of these wires so the number may vary. regards, tesseract
