Each US state sets their own requirements for the number of minutes school must be in session. The number of minutes or hours that school must be in session each day varies by state and may also be different for different grade levels. As of 2013, minimum hours per day vary from 2 hours to 7 hours.

For example, kindergarten in California must go at least 3 hours to be counted as a day of school while grades 4 to 12 must go at least 4 hours. Kindergarten in California must attend at least 600 hours of school per year while grades 4 to 8 must attend at least 900 hours and grades 9 to 12 must attend at least 1080 hours.
