To answer this question for any two tire sizes, you need to know the circumference (distance around the outside of the tread) for each tire. (See the link below for an online calculator.)

So, as an example:

  • Tire A, size 265/65-14, has a typical circumference of 86.59 inches.
  • Tire B, size 285/60-14, has a typical circumference of 86.28 inches.

Because Tire B has a smaller circumference, it must rotate slightly more than Tire A to cover the same distance. That, in turn, requires the engine to rotate slightly more to cover the same distance with Tire B than with Tire A.

In this example, the difference in circumference is only 1/3 inch -- less than 1/2 of 1 percent -- so the difference in fuel economy would be negligible.

Keep in mind that different styles of tire, or tires from different manufacturers, may have slightly different circumferences even though they are labeled with the same size. So to perform this calculation accurately, you must know the actual circumference. This information can be obtained from the Web sites of many tire dealers and manufacturers.

How many miles can you expect from your car tires?

It is strongly dependent on the driving style, road conditions, vehicle weight & air pressure they are subjected to. Also different types of tires are designed for different durabilities.
