Neurontin is highly variable in its dosing and comes in capsules of 300mg or 100mg. Some people can take up to 2,400 mg a day in divided doses, and with little effect. That is the highest dose I've heard. However, most people do well at 900 mg a day in 3 divided doses (300mg each dose). Other people can only take 100mg in three divided doses because the higher dose makes them too sleepy. Other meds for neuropathy type pain are: Lyrica, Trileptal, or another anti-convulsant medication.

No. Neurontin was developed as an anti-epileptic but is also used to treat neuropathic pain. Testing is currently underway to see if it can be effectively used to treat anxiety and bipolar disorders. Addendum to above answer by a different contributor: I am taking neurontin to quell anxiety created by benzodiazepine withdrawal. It is working wonders. Prior to taking the neurontin, I couldn't even leave the house, due to constant anxiety and panic attacks. Now, I take daily walks, do the shopping, take care of business. It is working wonders for me.
