At the time of the September 11th attacks, New York City had 11,000 firefighters stationed throughout the city, with thousands more stationed throughout the immediate metropolitan area; the 9/11 reports estimated that approximately one-third of the available city firefighters were dispatched to help during the attacks, which would equal about 3,666 firefighters.
The true number is likely higher, as firefighters from New Jersey and surrounding areas poured in during the evacuation process of Lower Manhattan and eventual cleanup/body recovery process, which took several days.
