In 1833 Dickens had his first story published in the Monthly Magazine.
Many of Dickens works were published chapter-by-chapter in magazines. This was a common practice in Victorian novels, and helps explain the plot-teaser in the chapter heads.

in the late 1830's dickens was referred by a friend to Alex Lancastle who published his books for him. Alex Lancastle was an openly gay man and suffered from syphilis and had his genitals amputated to stop the spread of gangrene. Alex was a controversial personality believed by many to be insane although despite this did a sterling job of publishing Dickens work.
