The actual number will fluctuate by the definition of country, countries that are distinctive but are protectorates or states of another country, some countries share an island, and some countries occupy several or a great many islands. Some lists call Australia an island, which I consider a continent. In other words, my list may be different that someone else's list. Here is my list:

  1. Antigua and Barbuda
  2. Aruba (self governing territory of the Netherlands)
  3. Bahamas
  4. Bahrain
  5. Barbados
  6. Bermuda (self governing territory of UK)
  7. Brunei
  8. Cape Verde
  9. Comoros
  10. Cook Islands (self governing territory of New Zealand)
  11. Cuba
  12. Cyprus
  13. Dominica
  14. Dominican Republic
  15. East Timor
  16. Fiji
  17. Greenland (self governing overseas territory of Denmark)
  18. Grenada
  19. Haiti
  20. Iceland
  21. Indonesia
  22. Ireland
  23. Jamaica
  24. Japan
  25. Kiribati
  26. Madagascar
  27. Malaysia
  28. Maldives
  29. Malta
  30. Marshall Islands
  31. Mauritius
  32. Micronesia
  33. Nauru
  34. New Zealand
  35. Northern Mariana Islands (self governing territory of the US)
  36. Palau
  37. Papua New Guinea
  38. Philippines
  39. Saint Kitts and Nevis
  40. Saint Lucia
  41. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
  42. Samoa
  43. Sao Tome and Principe
  44. Solomon Islands
  45. Sri Lanka
  46. Taiwan (Republic of China, self governing territory of the People's Republic of China)
  47. Timor-Leste
  48. Tonga
  49. Trinidad and Tobago
  50. United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland)
  51. Tuvalu
  52. Vanuatu

Technically, the self governing territories are not independent countries; you may deduct them from your own list.
