The actual number will fluctuate by the definition of country, countries that are distinctive but are protectorates or states of another country, some countries share an island, and some countries occupy several or a great many islands. Some lists call Australia an island, which I consider a continent. In other words, my list may be different that someone else's list. Here is my list:

Ireland does have many islands, but so do some other European countries, particularly Greece.
Captain Cook did not discover any countries. He explored many, including New Zealand and Australia, and he discovered and named the Hawaiian Islands, which he originall called the Sandwich islands. He did not discover any countries.
Asia is not comprised of separate islands; it is a large continent that includes countries like Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, and many others that are made up of multiple islands.
Some countries that consist primarily of islands or island chains include Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. In the United States, Hawaii is an example of a state made up entirely of islands.
