The federal government is made up of three branches, namely the executive, legislative, and judicial. Each branch is staffed with employees who are either elected, appointed, or otherwise placed using either military or civil service placement and recruiting procedures. All are considered government officials, and the exact number changes constantly, with hiring, retirement, discharges from the military, deaths, firings and reductions in force. The general trend has been that the total number of these officials has increased, and the number in the federal government is now at an all time high.
