1996 started the OBDII (On-board Diagnostics Generation 2) era. Most, if not all, OBDII systems measure the degradation of all components associated with emissions controls, which includes the O2 sensor and catalytic converter. To accomplesh this, there are two O2 sensors, one upstream, and one downstream. The upstream is usually located on the exhaust manifold, and the downstream is located just after the catalytic converter/s. The purpose of the downstream is simply to assess the efficiency of the upstream O2 sensor, as well as that of the catalytic converter, to make sure neither has not stopped working. The answer is that there are, most likely two O2 sensors on your car
how many oxygen sensors are on a 1997 Mazda mpv lx

A 1997 Dodge Dakota has two oxygen sensors.
On my 1998 there are 4. Two on each side, one in front of the first cat and one after the second one, on both sides.

Check
they have 2 o2 sensors on the muffler ELIA
There are a total of ( 4 oxygen sensors ) according to the engine wiring schematic for the 1997 Mercury Mountaineer in my Haynes repair manual ( 2 oxygen sensors are " upstream " sensors used by the PCM to adjust the air / fuel ratio of the engine ) ( 2 oxygen sensors are " downstream " sensors / catalyst monitors )
