Why was it difficult for poor men to work for the civil service?

The common type of exam required to become eligible for a civil service job depends on the type and level of the positions offered. A test to join the US Foreign Service will be more difficult then taking an exam for a clerical type of civil service position. Being poor has little to do with this.

How can one pass the AP exam?

Study but don't cram all on the night before the test. Make sure you give your self some time to do this. Take maybe like a week or so to review over everything that you have learned. On the night before the exam make sure to get a good night rest. In the morning have a good heartly meal

What high school did Jackson go to?

There were no "high schools" in Andrew Jackson's time. If there were any kind of schools available, they would have been small, multi-grade schoolhouses that probably ended at the 8th grade (however, an 8th grade final exam from 1895--much past Jackson's time-- contained questions that baffled personally known University grads who tried to answer them). Home schooling, apprenticeships, "reading the law", were the means of education probably until after the Civil War (not sure about that, just an educated guess).
