In the aftermath of World War II, only one U.S. soldier- a Private Eddie Slovik was actually executed ( By firing squad) for the crime of war-time desertion. Slovik was a former Plumbing apprentice and a small-time hood, that ideally should not have been in the Army to begin with. He was the only Deserter executed in the whole war effort of the US. A book and motion picture were made about the depressing Slovik saga- it occured near or during the Christmas season, to add misery.

The reasons for going AWOL ranged from personal issues to opposition to the war. Ultimately, the U.S. military implemented strict measures to address and reduce AWOL incidents during the conflict.
