Who invented the nuclear submarine?

The nuclear submarine wasn't actually "invented" by an individual. It was conceptualized by a number of people who saw the great leap forward that could be afforded by the application of nuclear power to submarine propulsion. Jules Verne, while not specific enough about the power source on his fictional submarine Nautilus ('it was completely powered by electricity'), was just a step of imagination away from the idea of a "magic" substance or principle that would power the whole thing up. (It is interesting that, as we look back, a lot of advanced technology could be seen by less developed peoples as "magic" as has been supposed in so many fictional books, television shows and films.) Finally, the United States was the first to get a design off the drawing board, assemble the thing, and sail it into history. Nautilus 90 North. Admiral Hyman George Rickover was the first person to patent the nuclear submarine.

How many people died in the Russian nuclear submarine accident in November 2008?

An article in my towns newspaper said that over 20 were killed. The accident occurred when a fire-extinguishing system went into operation in error aboard the submarine, Dygalo said. He said the dead included sailors and shipbuilders. The submarine was heading back to shore on its own power, and 21 people injured in the accident were evacuated to a ship that was escorting the sub. There were 208 people total aboard the vessel.

Where does nuclear waste go from a nuclear submarine?

In the United States, when a nuclear submarine has "run out of" nuclear fuel for its reactor (this takes many years), the reactor may be opened, and the spent fuel sent for reprocessing at the Naval Reactors facility at the Idaho National Laboratory. The reactor's core may then be refueled. This process can take some time, and handling the spent fuel is dangerous and requires complex procedures to prevent contamination. If the submarine is to be overhauled, or retired, the fuel is removed for reprocessing, and the reactor compartment is cut out of the submarine, sealed, and moved for disposal to the Department of Energy's Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington State, where they are kept in dry storage. The submarine may be welded back together, or the sections floated, until a new compartment and reactor are installed, or the vessel is cut up for scrap. Low level radioactive waste may be handled in other ways.
