The title "Sir" has been used for more than 1,000 years, and while it originated in England, there were similar titles in ancient Greece and Rome, and likely prior to those civilizations. But as an English honorific, it was used to address people in the military field, in aristocracy, and even in business. Additionally, as the British Empire spread across the globe, "Sir" was adopted by the militaries and aristocracies of those countries also - all of which makes it impossible to answer your question with a hard number.
