It is unknown exactly how many people made unofficial attempts to climb Mt Everest. On 8 June 1924, UK climbers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine made an attempt to reach the summit from which they never returned. In subsequent years, many more attempts were made to summit Mt Everest, but it was Edmund Hillary who succeeded in 1953.
