If you are referring to the one in Japan recently (11/3/2011) the final death toll is not known, but it is likely to be in the tens of thousands.

On March 11, 2011 in Japan they had an earthquake and a tsunami. A magnitude 9.0 earthquake rocked Japan at 2:46 p.m. local time followed by many aftershocks. The major earthquake struck about 15 miles. Also because of the earthquake and the aftershocks a tsunami was set off. The earthquake occurred off the coast of Honshu. It was the strongest earthquake to ever hit Japan. It was one of the top five largest recorded earthquakes in the world. The waves of the tsunami were as high as 35 feet. This was reported in several different Northern regions of Japan. There were 8,649 people who were confirmed dead, 21,911 people who are still missing till this day. because i am doing a report on the devastation's in japan. i have researched from many different websites that japan's death toll ranges from 10,000 that are dead and 16,000 missing. this is also the 5 worst earthquake in the history of the world with a magnitude of 8.9.

Hundreds.... they are still counting the death toll from the March 11th tragedy. There will probably be thousands of dead and missing in Miyagi Prefecture when it is all said and done. Many people will likely never be found, dead or alive.
The National Police Agency of Japan reported that as of Sept 11, 2011 a total of 15,850 deaths, 6,011 injured, and 3,287 people missing.
