On August 6, 1945, a lone B-29 bomber called the Enola Gay flew towards Hiroshima, an important industrial and military center in southwestern Japan. Reaching its target, the Enola Gay released a single atomic weapon it carried. The bomb detonated 2,000 feet above the city, flattening 42 square miles and killing at least 80,000 people outright.
