History tells of only one death at the South Pole: Rodney Marks, an Australian astrophysicist who died from methanol poisoning. He died on May 12, 2000 at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole research station.

This was his second winter-over at pole, and this time, he was employed with the 'Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, working on the Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory, a research project for the University of Chicago', according to his Wikipedia entry.
